How do dispersed remains become a question about a city?
Indonesia’s tentative-list submission describes buildings, objects and water features at Trowulan. Archival and field research challenges a confident canal grid and the proposed metropolitan extent.

The Indonesian tentative-list submission describes an extensive Majapahit urban archaeological area with buildings, objects and water features.
Habitation, administration and water remain useful questions even where the city’s reconstructed layout is contested.
Primary archival and field research challenges a confident canal grid and metropolitan extent. The tentative submission’s coordinate envelope is not an established ancient city boundary.
The tentative-list status and uncertain reconstruction remain important. One separate survey was inspected only through its abstract. A proposed similarity in sanitation is an interpretation, not evidence of a demonstrated transfer route.

Institutional primary description; introductory synthesis
Description; submission dated 6 October 2009
What remains uncertain
The original sherds were reportedly lost, restricting re-examination; an archival interpretation is not a freshly measured assemblage.

What remains uncertain
Functions and dates of particular well types remain interpretive; do not draw a definitive canal grid from the tentative-list description.

Indonesian submission: Trowulan tentative list ↓Recovered excavation correspondence dates ceramic material at Kĕḍaton to the fourteenth–fifteenth centuries; the report treats that evidence separately from older palace-location conjectures.
